Specifications:

• PDF ePlans:
15 letter-size pages of detailed measured drawings showing 2-d views of all the parts, plus 3-d views of selected areas. The measured drawings make it easy to see exactly how the bench is designed, but also how the Benchcrafted vises fit in.

Both Benchcrafted Glide Leg Vise and Tail Vise installation instructions will be included for convenience (they are also free to download from the website)

• PDF eNotes:
28 pages of design info, construction notes and techniques, and photos of the completed bench

• 3-d eDrawing of the complete bench with vises:
This CAD drawing can be rotated and viewed from any angle. You can even move the individual parts around and make them invisible or transparent to see exactly how the joinery works or the vises are installed. The software you'll need to download to view the 3-d drawing is available for free from SolidWorks eDrawings Viewer here.

• Printed Plans!
Four pages of 20" x 30" large-format prints of the measured drawings, showing the details in larger format for easier viewing away from a computer. Printed on 20-lb. bond paper, edge bound and shipped rolled (no creases!). Free Shipping!

Split-Top Bench Details

Workholding:
Benches are all about workholding, and our bench design has it all. The Benchcrafted Glide Leg Vise and Tail Vise form the guts of the Split-Top Roubo's workholding. The two-piece top is designed for easy clamping between the slabs (you can fit a parallel-head clamp in between), and with our Gap Stop accessory you can work across boards with ease and confidence. You can even store tools in the Gap Stop itself, thanks to a narrow gap running along the length. Flip it over and it becomes flush with the top for working large boards or assemblies. You can even make other Gap Stops to your own design for different purposes. A sliding deadman performs nearly all the functions of a sliding leg vise without ever getting in your way. Strategically placed holes in the legs and top present even more options for holdfasts and other holding devices.

Shaker Bench Details

Workholding:
Outfitted with our Tail Vise and Glide Leg Vise, the Benchcrafted Shaker Bench is capable of all typical furniture and cabinetmaking holding tasks. With the sliding deadman the bench can handle clamping large panels vertically for working the ends of panels or the edges of long boards. A generous top overhang provides space for clamping work directly to the top.

Structure:
The bench's cabinet is made from plywood with solid wood for the face frame and other structural elements. The top, vises and accessories are all made from solid hardwood. The top is made from 8/4 stock, with a 4" thick, 3" wide front section including the dog hole strip. The bench is less physically demanding to build than our Split-Top Roubo. We recommend hard or soft maple, beech, or ash. The empty bench weighs about 340 pounds. The bench doesn't move under the most rigorous planing tasks. Overall size is 86" long, 25" wide, 35" high.
Structure:
The bench is made from massive elements. The tops are 4" thick and 87" long. The legs are 3-1/2" thick and 5-3/8" wide with the rest of the base elements at 1-3/4" thick, meaning you can make the bench entirely from 8/4 stock. This bench weighs well over 300 pounds when built with hard maple or ash. Overall size is 87" long, 24" wide, 35" high.
Hardware (included in the Benchmakers Package):

The package includes all the hardware you need to build the bench, save for some common fasteners (wood screws and nails) you can purchase at any hardware store. We don't include these fasteners due the variable construction methods we outline in the construction notes. All other necessary hardware, including the various bolts and lag screws required, as well as 5 pair of hinges are included.

Shaker Benchmaker's Package Includes:

• Complete set of plans as listed above
• Benchcrafted Tail Vise
• Benchcrafted Glide Leg Vise
• Hardware Kit

Hardware (available in the Benchmakers Package):
The base is designed around our Benchcrafted Barrel Nuts knockdown hardware (the base can also be joined with a permanent drawbored mortise and tenon). Our Barrel Nuts make it quick and easy to mill the joint and then assemble the base. The protruding end of the nut lets you adjust it with a free hand while tightening the bolt with the other-you don't need a tool to insert or rotate the nut. The tops are locked to the base with four Spax lag screws. These German-made screws are top-notch quality, with deep, sharp threads and large washer-heads.

Accessories:
The Gramercy Holdfast is the only modern commercial holdfast available today, and we're glad to offer them as part of our Benchmaker's Package. The holes in the top, right leg and deadman are sized to work with the Gramercy Holdfast.

Benchmakers Package Includes:

• Complete set of plans as listed above
• Benchcrafted Tail Vise
• Benchcrafted Glide Leg Vise
• 4 BC Barrel Nuts along w/ four 8" bolts and washers.
• 4 Spax Lag Screws
• 2 Gramercy Holdfasts
• End cap hardware

Typical captive nut arrangements for knockdown bases involve either a square nut, recessed hex nut, or short, slotted cross-dowels. All of these fasteners make it tricky to assemble the joint without some frustration or extra tools. Our zinc-plated steel Barrel Nuts are over 2" long and are slightly undersized to fit easily in a 1" diameter hole, making it quick and easy to mill the joint and then assemble the base. The Barrel Nuts work best in a 1-3/4" thick rail, but they can work in thinner stock as well. The protruding end of the nut, with it's V-groove for grip, lets you insert and adjust it with a free hand while tightening the bolt with the other-you don't need a tool to insert or rotate the nut. Once you feel the bolt threading into the Barrel Nut, finish tightening the joint with a socket wrench. Four, 8" long 1/2"-13 zinc-plated steel bolts and washers are included.
